The foot is the first thing to hit the ground with every step we take. Based on how our foot moves and how well muscles control our foot position, determines whether or not stress is then passed up the chain to the knee, hip or even back. When structures in the foot get irritated it can be quite painful based on how much of our day and body weight we are on our feet.
