Knee Pain

The knee is the joint that connects the upper leg to the lower leg. These two bones are separated by a thick, shock-absorbing cartilage called the meniscus. The joint is surrounded by a capsule that contains ligaments inside and outside to provide stability to the knee. There are fluid-filled sacs called bursas and many other structures that help provide smooth glide, stability, and strength to the knee joint. As a result, there is a lot of tissues that can be irritated if structures are overworked or overwhelmed. Typically they do not simply fail, but rather have additional stress placed on by surrounding areas such as the foot and hip.
