If your low back starts to ache while standing at the kitchen sink, waiting in line, or doing household chores, you’re not alone. Many people assume they need to “stand up straighter,” but often it’s how we stand—not just how long—that contributes to discomfort.
A few simple adjustments can reduce strain on your spine and help you stay more comfortable throughout the day.
Standing at the sink often causes us to lean forward, increasing stress on the muscles and joints of the lower back.
Instead, try placing one foot on a small step stool or inside an open lower cabinet. This shifts more of your body weight through your hip rather than your low back, reducing muscle strain and making standing more comfortable. Switch feet every few minutes if you’ll be there for a while.
Whether you’re at the grocery store or standing at an event, avoid locking your knees and standing perfectly still.
Instead, stagger your stance slightly with one foot in front of the other. This allows you to shift your weight naturally onto your front leg, taking pressure off your spine. Every few minutes, gently rock your weight forward and back, then switch which foot is in front. These small movements help prevent stiffness and reduce prolonged stress on the same tissues.
If reaching into a deep sink causes your back to ache, consider raising your work closer to you.
Placing a bowl or basin in the bottom of the sink and washing dishes inside it reduces how far you have to lean forward. Even a few inches less bending can make a noticeable difference for your back.
Persistent back pain isn’t always about weakness or aging. Often, making small adjustments to how you move throughout the day can significantly reduce irritation and help you stay active doing the things you enjoy.
