FAQ

Is physical therapy just exercises? I exercise already.

Physical therapy aims to restore normal function to the musculoskeletal system of the individual. A functional problem, such as inability to reach because of shoulder pain, may be a result of dysfunction in the nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. The physical therapist will make a physical therapy diagnosis to determine where the pain is coming from and what structure is in dysfunction that may be contributing to the pain/problem. The therapist will then use various treatment techniques to restore function to the shoulder which may include joint mobilization/manipulation, stretching, strengthening, modalities, and soft tissue mobilization. A cookbook approach of “do these exercises if your shoulder hurts” is not physical therapy.

Can my chiropractor give me physical therapy?

Only a licensed physical therapist has the training to provide physical therapy or physiotherapy. In the same way a physical therapist is not qualified to provide chiropractic.

Are manipulations done by physical therapists the same as chiropractic adjustments?

Physical therapists manipulate for the sole reason of increasing movement/function to a segment of the body. Chiropractic adjustments are done to align the spine for improvement of health.

Do physical therapists treat only certain areas of the body?

Physical therapists are trained to treat any area of the neuromuscular skeletal system. At New Life we treat the causes of pain and dynsfunction not just symptoms – we have expert training and certifications to treat: jaw, neck, head, shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, back, hip, knee, and foot/ankle pain/problems.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is skilled treatment that helps individuals achieve independence in all facets of their lives. Occupational therapy assists people in developing the “skills for the job of living” that are necessary for independent and satisfying lives.
